Overbooked Calendar : Bring simplicity to your commitments

Cheri, June 26, 2024June 26, 2024

I heard this concept one time and it has stuck with me ever since …Form your Calendar ….. and then you fill your calendar.

If you’re living in the busy cycle and your calendar is running the show I get you because I too was there. I honestly would feel this rush of anxiety when I would look at our calendar because literally every day we had somewhere to be or something going on… we ran from place to place some days we were hardly even home which obviously left no time for rest or time of un-rushed connection with my children. I was not only feeling anxious but I noticed our overly busy schedule was impacting my girls. My youngest was having a hard time leaving the house… she would have melt downs over getting dressed or even something as simple as putting her shoes on. I was getting short with them because we were constantly running late and it was stressful. I wanted to do the engagements we committed to because usually once we got there we enjoyed it but what I learned is that sometimes even things that are good and enjoyable may not be things we should have on our calendar because we’re committing to too much and thus taking our time and energy away from other things or people. Maybe our busy schedule isn’t taking us away from others but just maybe our overly busy schedule isn’t allowing us time for rest or time for us as moms to do something for ourselves which is so important (that’s a conversation for another day 😉)

So how do you form your calendar and then fill it …

*Start by making a list of everything you do in a week (caring for the home .. work … kids activities.. church commitments.. )

After everything is listed rate everything on a scale from 1-4

1-things you have to do … ex.feed the kids ….. homeschooling…

2- for things I should do (laundry and house chores )

3- things I enjoy doing that help me such as bible study or working out

4- things I discovered  I did because I was afraid to say no or because I wanted to look good or have my family look good

*** to refocus and get a better handle on your schedule start by cutting out anything you scored a 4 … then move to the 3s sometimes these things that seem good might be adding too much stress and now isn’t the right season to do them and we need to take them off our plate

🍃As the arch keeper of your home …. You are in charge of what comes in and goes out of your schedule. As we spend time thinking about our calendar and how to form and then fill it I want to point out how we see this concept in the Bible. If we look at the story of creation ..God created the sky the land and the sea and then he filled them.

Take your time to reflect on your current calendar …  pray about what you can take off your calendar and which things are serving you and your family and should remain on your calendar moving forward. When our calendar reflects our priorities and vision for our family we are helping ourselves live a simpler mindful mom-life.
